MacSorley's gold rush continues as he nets our Disability honour

By Adam McKendry

After helping Team GB to the most unlikely of gold medals at the wheelchair basketball World Championships, James MacSorley won the Sportsperson with a Disability prize at the Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards last night.

The 23-year-old Belfast man, who plays for the Belfast Knights as well as the Sheffield Steelers, was part of the squad that defeated the USA in the final in Hamburg for a fairytale victory.

MacSorley beat golfer Gareth McNeilly and swimmers Bethany Firth and Catherine Parke to the accolade last night.

Massereene golfer McNeilly was part of the European side that won the Phoenix Cup, the Ryder Cup equivalent for disabled golfers.

McNeilly helped the European team to victory over their US counterparts in Florida in October.

Firth had another great year, winning four World Para-Swimming European Championships titles, while Parke came away with two gold medals at the regional finals held in Dublin as part of the Ulster Special Olympics team.
