Pro-independence supporters waved the Saltire flag and painted their faces blue in a march hijacked by pro-unionists armed with Union Jack flags. The event was called the All Under One Banner march and was attended by thousands. Supporters of the referendum chanted: “Independence now!”

Many of them carried a mixture of Scottish and EU flags.Police Scotland estimated 30,000 people attended the rally on Glasgow Green.Organisers announced the march in The National and said: “Marchers can either ignore the counter-demonstrators or smile and wave, our movement doesn’t need any negative publicity.”

Ms Sturgeon announced she intends to hold another Scottish independence referendum before May 2021.She said: “As voters go to the polls for the European elections on May 23, our message will be clear and direct. And unlike Labour’s, it will be unambiguous.“Scotland’s not for Brexit, Scotland’s for Europe.”

SNP activists were also issuing ‘Stop Brexit’ flyers in the run up to the EU elections later this month. The SNP is expected to win between three and four of Scotland’s six European seats, according to polls from YouGov and Panelbase.Meanwhile, Ms Sturgeon’s plans to ditch the pound were branded a “sham” after she was unable to name all her party’s tests for a new currency.

The SNP leader made her gaffe when put on the spot about scrapping sterling in an independent Scotland.Ms Sturgeon also conceded there were “concerns” over a switch and appeared to play down the prospect of a rapid transition. She spoke after her party’s conference at the weekend, when members defied the leadership to vote for fast-tracking a new currency “as soon as practicable after independence”.

Bosses did see off Left-wing activists who had sought to ditch the six fiscal tests to be met before adopting a new currency.Asked to spell out those tests yesterday, Ms Sturgeon definitively name-checked just three. She provided a vague answer that could cover some other areas but also listed another rule not even put forward by the party’s own Growth Commission.Scottish Tory finance spokesman Murdo Fraser said: “If Nicola Sturgeon can’t even remember the SNP’s currency plans, what chance does anyone else have?

“This exposes the fact that the SNP doesn’t care about the detail – it wants to force independence through whatever the cost.“It won’t matter whether there are six tests or 600 – the SNP’s currency plan is a sham and will be rejected by the people of Scotland.”There have been a string of warnings that a new currency would mean disaster for thousands of Scots. A Growth Commission researcher said this week that house prices could slump, pushing an estimated 45,000 households into negative equity as a result of the economic shock. Scotland voted against independence in 2014 with 2,001,926 voting no and 1,617,989 voting in favour.
