Former UFC heavyweight king Lesnar was set to return to the Octagon this year to challenge Daniel Cormier for the 265lbs title. The WWE superstar, however, couldn’t agree terms with the UFC brass and the fight was scrapped.Lesnar’s failure to hash out a deal with the UFC prompted him to hang up his gloves for a third time. The 41-year-old’s retirement led to the booking of a rematch between Cormier and Stipe Miocic, a bout which will headline UFC 241 in Anaheim.

It also well and truly put the final nail in the coffin of a dream showdown with Jones, which the reigning light-heavyweight champion called for in July 2017.Given the pair’s respective fan bases, Lesnar vs Jones would’ve been one of the biggest pay-per-views in UFC history.Jones was very much looking forward to locking horns with the South Dakota native but believes he’s more than earned the right to never fight again.“He would’ve been a tall order,” said of a fight with Lesnar in an interview with BT Sport. “He would’ve been a tall order if that fight would’ve happened.

“It would’ve been a big fight for combat sports - myself and Lesnar or even DC [Cormier] and Lesnar.“Yeah, it is a disappointment. It is. Brock has done a lot in combat sports and as an entertainer.“He deserves to rest easy however he likes. He’s been an entertainer since like middle school with the wrestling stuff.”Jones, 31, is next scheduled to fight at UFC 239 in Las Vegas, where he’ll defend his 205lbs crown against Thiago Santos.

Should the New York native see off ‘Maretta’, a trilogy fight with Cormier at heavyweight will be at the top of many MMA fan’s wish-lists. Jones, however, isn’t so keen on the bout.He said: “Daniel Cormier is a special athlete and everyone can be beat.“I think my greatest chance of losing would be to a guy like Daniel Cormier, with giving him a power and strength advantage over me, it just doesn’t make sense.“Right now I make light heavyweight very easily and it just wouldn’t make no sense to fight a guy who I think technically [is] on your level, and to give him a size advantage, I’m not doing it.“I’m not doing it. I’m sure my fans don’t like to hear me talk like that, but that’s just me being a realist and being respectful to Daniel’s abilities.”
