The group of congresswoman nicknamed “The Squad” contains Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York representative whose family come from US territory Puerto Rico, Ilhan Omar, a Somali born Minnesota representative who arrived in the US as a refugee and became a citizen in 2000, African-American Massachusetts representative Ayanna Presley and Michigan’s Rashida Tlaib, who was born to Palestinian immigrants in Detroit.

The group are considered to be on the hard left of the Democrats. But a tweet from Mrs Tlaib has remerged which could prove to be awkward for the politician given her outspoken censure of the President's remarks. In 2015, Mrs Tlaib posted an article from The Guardian on Mr Trump suggesting a ban on all Muslim immigration to the US and added: “Deport this a**hole!”At the time, she had finished a five-year term in Michigan’s House of Representatives.READ MORE: Nigel Farage speaks to Piers Morgan about US ambassador

Mrs Tlaib was the first Muslim woman to serve in Michigan’s state legislature and the first Palestinian-American woman to be elected to Congress.Mr Trump’s tweet read: “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came.“Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!”The four women held a press conference insisting: “We are here to stay.”

After the POTUS criticised Ms Omar in a North Carolina rally, the crowd could be heard chanting: "Send her back, Send her back."Mr Trump later disavowed the chants and he was criticised by Prime Minister-elect Boris Johnson.Mrs Tlaib has called for Mr Trump to be impeached saying in a radio interview: "Look, it’s not a waste of time to hold the president of the United States accountable.“We need to understand our duties as members of Congress and I believe looking at even Nixon’s impeachment, or his—literally, his resignation, it was Republicans and Democrats coming together and putting country first, coming together and putting our values first.“You’re seeing it now more and more.”In between her departure from the Michigan legislature and election to Congress, Mrs Tlaib worked at a Detroit non-profit organisation that provided free legal representation to workers, Mrs Tlaib holds a Juris Doctor degree from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
