Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was stopped from becoming Manchester United manager by his wife, it has been claimed. The German was tipped to move to Old Trafford after the Red Devils axed David Moyes in 2014 following their failure to qualify for the Champions League.Klopp was making a name for himself at Borussia Dortmund at the time, helping them win back to back Bundesliga titles and steering his side to the Champions League final in 2013.And former Liverpool star Phil Thompson, speaking to TV2, has revealed Klopp would have become United manager if it wasn’t for his wife.

“I interviewed Klopp for Sky, and I asked if he and Liverpool were created for each other. He looked at me and asked why,” Thompson said.“Then Klopp told me he could have taken over Manchester United, but his wife said it wasn’t right.“When Liverpool arrived, his wife said it was right. There is something strange there. It is as if he’s created for Liverpool.”Liverpool are flying high with Klopp at the helm.Sunday’s stirring 3-1 win over Manchester City has seen his side open up an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League table. And Thompson believes the German has transformed the Reds into the best team in the country.“This is one of the best Liverpool teams in the club’s history,” he said.

“In my time we always lost three to four games [at this stage of the season], but this team leads by nine points and lost only one game last season.“This season they have beaten everyone, except for a draw at Old Trafford. They are doing something great.”Jose Mourinho claimed after Liverpool’s win over City that the Reds would win the title this season. And Klopp has responded by saying: “Are we thinking about going through the season unbeaten? Not at all.“We just don’t think about it. We don’t feel any pressure, to be 100 per cent honest.“The things that will now come up, we know about. If you are with us, then nine points is a positive. There’s a long way to go.

“Other people will 100 per cent say – and have said already – that from now on Liverpool can only lose it.“That’s a very negative approach, but you can see it like this. But I can promise you that we don’t care.“We were completely focused on this game and not the situation in the table and how many points we are ahead of City.“That’s crazy. Nine points ahead of City, you cannot imagine that something like this would happen.“But it’s not important because who wants to be first in November? You want to be first in May.“The pressure or whatever is not there yet. It will come, but at the moment it’s just opportunity.”
