The ex-FLOTUS shared a rare throwback photograph of herself as a child on Instagram with her big brother, Craig. The photograph, likely taken in the late 1960s, showed a playful Michelle smiling with her hair pulled up in bunches, while her brother Craig stands dutifully behind her.

The nostalgic post came after Michelle reflected on growing up on the South Side of Chicago, not far from where the Obama Summit will take place on October 29.The two siblings are wrapped up in the photo, likely because of the cold winters Chicago is known for. What little Michelle in the photo didn’t know was that in years to come, she would fulfil the role of First Lady. Her brother, would also go on to achieve great things, becoming the vice president for player and organisational development for the New York Knicks.

The snap was posted to the Obama’s Instagram page, as well as being sent out to subscribers of the Obama Foundation email list with a warm message. The message read: “When I think back to some of the earliest days of my childhood, I remember moments like this — my brother Craig and I, smiling outside on the South Side of Chicago.“It was there, in a diverse and changing neighbourhood, that I began a journey that took me to settings I never could have imagined at that age.“It’s the place that made me who I am.JUST IN:Michelle Obama: Former FLOTUS to launch groundbreaking 'landmark'

“I’m thinking about my neighbourhood because in a few weeks, Barack and I will be joining change makers from the South Side and around the world for our third Obama Foundation Summit.“It’ll take place October 28 and 29, and we’ll be live streaming it on obama.org.“We’ll hear stories from authors and artists, luminaries and leaders, about how the places they’ve been have made them the people they’ve become.“And you’ll hear how Chicago influenced both Barack and me — and how we hope the Obama Presidential Center will help shape the journeys of others.”DON'T MISSMeghan Markle receives heartwarming message from Michelle Obama Michelle Obama embarrassingly mocks her husbandMichelle Obama speaks out on Meghan Markle ‘breaking the mould’

The image was accompanied by a string of similar photographs all taken while Michelle was growing up in Chicago. On the topic of the Obama Summit, she said this year’s theme would be one close to her heart called: “Places reveal our purpose”.The vintage photographs instilled in Michelle a yearning for the past and realisation that some things never change. She said: “Looking back at photos like these, I’m struck by how much of the South Side I still carry with me today.

“It was the place where Craig and I developed our competitive edge, boxing in the kitchen and playing in the neighbourhood parks.“It’s where we rode bikes down the street and spent summers hanging out with friends of all backgrounds — before white flight took hold and began to reshape our community.“And it was there, on the second floor of a modest brick bungalow, that I saw my parents raise their children with integrity, dignity, and purpose — values that I carry with me every day.”In the subscription email, which has since been published to the Obama Foundation website, Michelle urged readers to follow suit and share images from the past that they felt had shaped them.

She said: “We’ll feature submissions on obama.org and at the Summit, so that guests can witness the stories of folks like you who help support the Obama Foundation and make our work possible.”This year’s Summit will also be live-streamed, enabling those from all corners of the globe to tune in.As well as her husband, former US President Barack Obama, attending the event, participants will include scholars, African leaders, Community Leadership Corps members, and representatives of the Girls Opportunity Alliance and My Brother’s Keeper Alliance communities. The Obama Foundation was created in 2014 to bridge the gap between opportunity and a lack thereof among the black population worldwide.
